The news about the fire and the death of his mother and sister, Laura, hit Derek extremely hard. First, he had just been in shock. Once that passed, he felt sick and locked himself in the bathroom, not wanting anyone near him.

Eventually, Scott’s mom managed to coax him out to offer a hug, and gentle suggestions that maybe he should try to sleep. Now, lying in bed on the bottom bunk, he curled up in a ball with his face buried in his pillow and started to cry, trying to keep the sobs stifled so Isaac wouldn’t hear him.
